The Wine Boutique was opened in 2022 by Danie Geldenhuys, a winemaker who returned home to Riversdale to manage the family business interests and brought his love for good wine with him. He saw a gap. Not just for cheaper wine, but for better wine, chosen properly, served with a bit of expertise and a lot of pride.
Danie spent his early career as a winemaker, working in the South African wine industry before returning to Riversdale to take up his role in the family business. The wine never quite left him. So he opened The Wine Boutique on the same N2 premises as Bali Trading, the family's wholesale home decor business - a small, considered space dedicated to the bottles he believes deserve attention.
Today, the boutique stocks more than 800 wines, with a tightly curated range of South African whiskey, brandy, gin, and craft beer. Everything on the shelves earns its place. We're not trying to be everything to everyone. We're trying to be the place where a customer walks in looking for a good Pinotage for a Saturday braai, and walks out with a bottle they're genuinely excited about.
Hand-picked isn't a marketing word for us. It means Danie knows the wines on these shelves. He knows the producers, the regions, the vintages. He knows what's a good R150 bottle and what's a good R1 500 bottle, and crucially, what isn't. The balance we work hard to strike is offering wines the market actually wants alongside the gems most people would never find on a supermarket shelf.
We work with producers from Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, the Hemel-en-Aarde, the Swartland, Robertson and beyond. The wines are mostly South African because South Africa makes wine that holds its own anywhere in the world, and we're proud of that.
Good wine doesn't have to be expensive. A fair amount for a properly good bottle starts at around R120. Most of what we stock sits between R150 and R500. We do carry the special-occasion bottles too, the wines you put away for a milestone, but the heart of the boutique is well-made, fairly-priced wine you'd happily open on a Tuesday.
The same logic applies to the spirits. The whiskeys, brandies and gins on these shelves are local, small-batch, and chosen because they're worth your time.
